Weekly Update, September 8th - 12th

Dear Families, 

 

We are in the full swing of things here at KMS! As the weather begins to cool, please remind students to dress appropriately for the day and check our Lost and Found for missing items. Parents, we encourage you to check in regularly with your students about homework and grades—it’s a great way to stay connected and support their success. Picture retakes will be October 7th.

 

Here are a few specifics: 

 

English: In English, we will read chapters 2-3 in The Watsons Go to Birmingham. If students are absent, they can access the eBook on Canvas. Students will complete entry 1 in their character journals. This will be collected at the end of our novel unit. It is important that they do not lose these! I will direct students to keep them in their English folders in class. For our narrative writing instruction, students will learn about different points of view and write their own leads for their personal narrative essays. Video lessons are available on Canvas for students who may be absent or need additional support. Lastly, we will review pronouns and students will complete an exit ticket assignment. Please note, I will be completing a training on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Students will have a substitute, but I will be available by email with any questions or concerns.

Math: In math we will continue to work with factors and multiples. We'll learn how to do prime factorization using factor trees. We have also started using an online program called Delta Math. If students get behind in class, they can access the website from home using the link in Canvas. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Social Studies: Next week, we’re diving into latitude and longitude and starting a fun in-class project. Students will have time to complete everything during class—homework will only be needed if they don’t finish in class. Projects and a short quiz are coming up the following week on Tuesday the 16th (A-day) and Wednesday the 17th (B-day). Thanks for your support! 

 

 

Science: We are continuing with Unit 1, working on finding the density of objects. Students with missing assignments can come check their Science mailbox for the worksheets and complete them at any time.

PACK: Last week we wrapped up Instructions. The students created instructions on how to make a PB&J for a person who had never heard about, seen, or made a sandwich. Some of these sandwiches were interesting to say the least, but it was a great illustration of communication. This week we are going to be covering some “Gentleman and Lady” stuff. This will be a class on respect and how we should be acting in school, in public, and in life. We will be talking about showing respect to our neighbors and ourselves by talking about holding doors open; saying “please,” “thank you,” “sir” and “ma’am;” covering the dress code and more.

STEM: In STEM this week, students will begin creating locker organizers out of cardboard using the Engineering Design Process. Organizers will be due on September 15th and 16th. Students may bring additional supplies from home to improve their designs. We will also have a quiz on Engineering Design Process vocabulary on September 17th and 18th. We’re off to a great start!

¡En KMS estamos en plena actividad! Con el frío refrescando, les pedimos que recuerden a los estudiantes que se vistan apropiadamente y que revisen nuestra sección de objetos perdidos para ver si les faltan. Padres, les animamos a que se pongan en contacto regularmente con sus estudiantes para hablar sobre sus tareas y calificaciones; es una excelente manera de mantenerse en contacto y apoyar su éxito. Las nuevas fotos serán el 7 de octubre.

 

 

Inglés: En inglés, leeremos los capítulos 2 y 3 de "Los Watson van a Birmingham". Si los estudiantes no asisten, pueden acceder al libro electrónico en Canvas. Los estudiantes completarán la primera entrada en sus diarios de personajes. Esta se recogerá al final de la unidad de novela. ¡Es importante que no la pierdan! Les indicaré que la guarden en sus carpetas de inglés en clase. Para la instrucción de escritura narrativa, los estudiantes aprenderán sobre diferentes puntos de vista y escribirán sus propias entradas para sus ensayos narrativos personales. Hay videolecciones disponibles en Canvas para los estudiantes que puedan estar ausentes o necesiten apoyo adicional. Por último, repasaremos los pronombres y los estudiantes completarán una tarea de boleto de salida. Tenga en cuenta que estaré completando una capacitación el lunes y martes de esta semana. Los estudiantes tendrán un sustituto, pero estaré disponible por correo electrónico para cualquier pregunta o inquietud.

Matemáticas: En matemáticas, continuaremos trabajando con factores y múltiplos. Aprenderemos a hacer factorización prima usando árboles de factores. Estudios Sociales: La próxima semana, nos sumergiremos en la latitud y la longitud y comenzaremos un divertido proyecto en clase. Los estudiantes tendrán tiempo para completar todo durante la clase; solo se necesitarán tareas si no las terminan en clase. Los proyectos y un breve cuestionario se realizarán la semana siguiente, el martes 16 (día A) y el miércoles 17 (día B). ¡Gracias por su apoyo!

PAQUETE: La semana pasada terminamos las Instrucciones. Los estudiantes crearon instrucciones sobre cómo hacer un sándwich de mantequilla de cacahuete y mermelada para una persona que nunca había oído hablar, visto o preparado un sándwich. Algunos de estos sándwiches fueron interesantes, como mínimo, pero fue un gran ejemplo de comunicación. Esta semana vamos a cubrir algunas cosas de "Caballero y Dama". Esta será una clase sobre respeto y cómo debemos comportarnos en la escuela, en público y en la vida. Hablaremos sobre cómo mostrar respeto a nuestros vecinos y a nosotros mismos, hablando sobre mantener las puertas abiertas; decir "por favor", "gracias", "señor" y "señora"; el código de vestimenta y más.

STEM: En STEM esta semana, los estudiantes comenzarán a crear organizadores de casilleros con cartón utilizando el Proceso de Diseño de Ingeniería. La fecha límite para entregar los organizadores es el 15 y 16 de septiembre. Los estudiantes pueden traer materiales adicionales de casa para mejorar sus diseños. También tendremos un examen sobre el vocabulario del Proceso de Diseño de Ingeniería los días 17 y 18 de septiembre. ¡Comenzamos con buen pie!
