6th Grade Weekly Update
Dear Families,
We hope you enjoyed your long Labor Day weekend! Here’s what’s coming up this week in 6th grade at KMS:
- PowerSchool: If you haven’t downloaded the PowerSchool app yet, we encourage you to do so. Students do best when families stay connected. If you need help, Natalie in the front office is happy to assist.
- Parent Email Addresses: On Wednesdays during Advisory, all students will send a screenshot of their grades to a parent/guardian. Please make sure it is written down and ready for this week for your student to access.
- Activity Cards: If you haven’t purchased an activity card yet, they are available in the office for $30. Students planning to wrestle or join track will need one. By purchasing now, they can attend KMS and KHS sporting events for free (except for district/state events).

Math: This week in math, we'll explore factors and multiples as we find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a set of numbers. We'll also review the difference between prime and composite numbers. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Social Studies: Geography Edition! 🌍✏️We’re wrapping up our notes on a small (but mighty!) unit on latitude and longitude – and yes, we know it can feel like A LOT of lines and directions! But your kids are doing great, and we're making sure to keep it fun and engaging. We will start our hands on practice with latitude and longitude this upcoming week. This week, we're finishing up our notes in class. If your child happens to misplace their notes (it happens to the best of us), don’t worry – everything is available on Canvas for easy access. If you have a few minutes, please try reviewing the material with your child. A quick chat at dinner or a mini quiz in the car can go a long way in helping them feel confident. Bonus points if you ask them to show you where the equator is! 😉 Thanks so much for all your support at home. We couldn’t do it without you!

Science: Next week, we will be talking about density and how this is a physical property of matter. Headphones are on the school supply list and will be used every week in Science. Please provide a pair for your students if they do not have any as school pairs are limited. Students with missing assignments can make these up at any time for full credit. Please check grades weekly in Powerschool.

PACK: This week we will be covering instructions. The students are going to learn how to deliver concise instructions and learn the value of precise language. The students are going to get to work with a variety of instructions for various tasks and learn how hard it is to create good instructions. The students will then have an opportunity to write their own instructions on how to make a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich. Please let me know if your student has a peanut allergy where they cannot be in the room with an open peanutbutter jar.

STEM: This week in STEM, students will explore the Flint, Michigan water crisis and discuss how the engineering design process can solve real-world problems. We will also examine a case study called Marisol and begin our first class project. Please ensure your child has returned their signed safety contract, as they cannot participate in the project without it. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

¡Esperamos que hayan disfrutado de su largo fin de semana del Día del Trabajo! Les presentamos las actividades de esta semana para 6.º grado en KMS:
PowerSchool: Si aún no han descargado la aplicación PowerSchool, les animamos a hacerlo. Los estudiantes se desempeñan mejor cuando las familias se mantienen conectadas. Si necesitan ayuda, Natalie, de la oficina principal, estará encantada de ayudarles.
Correo electrónico para padres: Los miércoles, durante la sesión de orientación, todos los estudiantes enviarán una captura de pantalla de sus calificaciones a un padre/tutor. Por favor, asegúrense de anotarla y tenerla lista para esta semana para que su estudiante pueda acceder a ella.
Tarjetas de actividades: Si aún no han comprado una tarjeta de actividades, están disponibles en la oficina por $30. Los estudiantes que planeen participar en lucha libre o atletismo necesitarán una. Al comprarla ahora, podrán asistir a los eventos deportivos de KMS y KHS gratis (excepto los eventos distritales/estatales).

Estudios Sociales: ¡Edición Geografía! 🌍✏️ Estamos terminando nuestros apuntes de una unidad pequeña (¡pero muy completa!) sobre latitud y longitud. Y sí, sabemos que puede parecer un montón de líneas e indicaciones. Pero sus hijos lo están haciendo genial, y nos estamos asegurando de que sea divertido y atractivo. Comenzaremos nuestra práctica con latitud y longitud la próxima semana. Esta semana, estamos terminando nuestros apuntes en clase. Si su hijo/a pierde sus apuntes (nos pasa a todos), no se preocupe: todo está disponible en Canvas para facilitar su acceso. Si tiene unos minutos, por favor, intente repasar el material con su hijo/a. Una charla rápida durante la cena o un pequeño cuestionario en el coche pueden ayudarle mucho a sentirse seguro/a. ¡Puntos extra si le pide que le muestre dónde está el ecuador! 😉 Muchas gracias por todo su apoyo en casa. ¡No podríamos hacerlo sin ustedes!

Ciencias: La próxima semana hablaremos sobre la densidad y cómo esta es una propiedad física de la materia. Los auriculares están en la lista de útiles escolares y se usarán todas las semanas en Ciencias. Por favor, proporcionen unos a sus estudiantes si no tienen, ya que los auriculares son limitados. Los estudiantes con tareas pendientes pueden recuperarlas en cualquier momento para obtener el crédito completo. Por favor, revisen las calificaciones semanalmente en Powerschool.

Trabajarán con diversas instrucciones para diversas tareas y aprenderán lo difícil que es crear buenas instrucciones. Luego, tendrán la oportunidad de escribir sus propias instrucciones sobre cómo preparar un sándwich de mantequilla de cacahuete y mermelada. Por favor, avísenme si su estudiante tiene alergia al cacahuete y no puede estar en la sala con un frasco de mantequilla de cacahuete abierto.
