Dear Families,
It’s hard to believe we’re already getting to that time of year when the mornings start feeling a little cooler! We have a couple of quick reminders for families as we head into fall. Students will not be allowed into the building until 7:55 a.m., so please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather while waiting outside. We also want to remind everyone about our dress code expectations. We have seen quite a few shirts that expose students’ stomachs, and off-the-shoulder tops are not allowed. Please take a quick look at what your student is wearing before they leave for school each morning. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe, comfortable, and ready to learn!

The KMS 6th Grade Team
Here are a few specifics for individual classes:
English: Students will read chapters 2-3 in The Watsons Go to Birmingham and complete the first journal entry in their character journal. We will also take notes on suffixes and long and short vowel sounds. Additionally, students will learn all about writing effective claims. After this week, students will have practiced all elements of an introductory paragraph in a Response to Literature essay.
Students will be sent home with their initial STAR Reading Test Report. Please review this with them, paying particular attention to the Grade Equivalent score.

Math: We’ll continue to explore factors and multiples and review for our test. The Chapter 1 test will be on Wednesday for A-day and Thursday for B-day. A study guide will be sent home to help students prepare. There is still time to get those missing assignments turned in. Please let me know if you have questions.

Social Studies: Next week, we will begin a fun project where students will design their own individual cities using the 5 Map Essentials. Students will also have a quiz on latitude and longitude. They will need to use these skills to identify continents and oceans. If you have a few minutes, please encourage your student to review their notes and practice these skills at home. A little extra practice can make a big difference! Thank you for your help and support!

Science: We are moving on to Lesson 3, Irregular Density. Please check grades in Powerschool. Most assignments are in Canvas and due one week after we start them in class. After fifteen days, a missing assignment turns into a permanent zero.

PACK: This week we wrapped up a block of instructions where your student wrote about how to create a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We learned about how words matter when the person making the sandwich took the instructions very literally. Next week we will be discussing respect (example: boys letting the girls out first) and re-discussing school expectations and how to communicate with teachers via email.

STEM: Next week, students will complete their first project using the Engineering Design Process. If your student is absent, the project will need to be completed from home. All project instructions and information are available in Canvas. Our Unit 1 Vocabulary Test will be on September 25 for A Day and September 28 for B Day. The vocabulary words and study materials can be found in Canvas under the Unit Vocabulary Helps module. Please encourage your student to review the vocabulary regularly and stay caught up on all assignments.

Queridas familias:
¡Es difícil creer que ya estamos llegando a esa época del año en la que las mañanas comienzan a sentirse un poco más frescas! Tenemos un par de recordatorios rápidos para las familias mientras nos preparamos para el otoño.
Los estudiantes no podrán entrar al edificio hasta las 7:55 a. m., así que por favor asegúrense de que su estudiante esté vestido apropiadamente para el clima mientras espera afuera.
También queremos recordarles a todos nuestras expectativas sobre el código de vestimenta. Hemos visto bastantes camisas que dejan el estómago descubierto, y no se permiten blusas o camisas que dejen los hombros al descubierto. Por favor, revisen rápidamente lo que lleva puesto su estudiante antes de salir a la escuela cada mañana.

Aquí hay algunos detalles específicos de cada clase:
Inglés: Los estudiantes leerán los capítulos 2 y 3 de The Watsons Go to Birmingham y completarán la primera entrada en su diario de personajes. También tomaremos apuntes sobre los sufijos y los sonidos de las vocales largas y cortas. Además, los estudiantes aprenderán todo sobre cómo escribir argumentos efectivos. PACK: Esta semana terminamos una actividad de instrucciones en la que su estudiante escribió cómo preparar un sándwich de mantequilla de maní y mermelada. Aprendimos sobre la importancia de las palabras cuando la persona que preparaba el sándwich siguió las instrucciones de manera muy literal.
La próxima semana hablaremos sobre el respeto (por ejemplo, que los niños dejen salir primero a las niñas) y volveremos a hablar sobre las expectativas de la escuela y cómo comunicarse con los maestros por correo electrónico.
