Welcome to the KMS 6th Grade Weekly Update!

If you would like to see the daily agenda for your student, please use this link Agenda_Update, it will be updated weekly.

There will be early release on Wednesday December 11. Students will be dismissed at 1:15.

SUCCESS which is an after-school program. Every Tuesday and Thursday in the 6th grade computer lab from 3:15-4:15. Students can come work on homework, makeup work, and redo assignments, in any subject to make themselves a Successful 6th grader!

LANGUAGE ARTS:

*Each day will entail about 5 minutes of cursive writing. I use this at the beginning of class to help them focus and "slow down" from recess, etc.

*Several students are ready to print the first copy of their Narrative Writing. My goal is to have this writing finished by the end of the week.

*I will be adding AR into Power School this Friday. I want you to know where your child is towards his or her goal before the Christmas Break. Please be aware that putting in the score (or lack of) will bring the grade down significantly if they are not current on reading. Students should be at 70% of their Accelerated Reading goal by the end of this week. Most of the students have a goal of 15 points (which needs to include 5 points of the Fantasy genre). So...this means that a student, who is on track for meeting his or her goal, should be at approximately 11 points. Each child has access to their AR points and books that they have read. If a student scores below 70%; they must re-read the book and then I will delete the quiz, so that they can re-take it. I am needing your support in ensuring that your child is reading at night and has a book checked out to read.

*Homework this week is a reading worksheet on "The Birth of Television." One page includes the text and the backside has 9 comprehension questions. This is due on Friday, 12/13.

MATH:

Mrs. Cann is back!  I will be sending home an up-to-date progress report with your student today or tomorrow.  Any missing assignments need to be completed by Christmas Break.  I will not accept any late assignments listed on that progress report after break.  On Wednesday and Thursday, I will send home a note explaining how grading will be done from this point forward as I will be making some changes.  Please don't hesitate to reach out to me should you have any questions.  Thank you!

PACK:

PACK will continue to work on the Six Pillars of Character.  This week our focus will be on Caring.

SCIENCE:

This week we will be learning how electrons are organized in atoms and applying that knowledge to the periodic table. We will also begin our project on the periodic table where every student will pick an element to do research on and create a wanted poster that explains what they found.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We will be doing notes and vocab on the Maya Civilization.  At the end of the week we will be discussing symmetry and creating a mask.  Students will be getting their unit tests back this week.  If they decide to redo the quiz, it will need to be done BEFORE Christmas break.  Thank you.

STEM:

This week in STEM we are making a connection between simple machines and the role they play in the human body.  Then, we will learn just a little about the human skeletal system by memorizing 25 basic bones in the human body.
