How to use NetStorage to edit your files

Using Novell NetStorage

NetStorage can be used to access Novell from on- or off-campus wherever there's an Internet connection.

The major difference between using the Novell client and NetStorage is that the client allows direct editing of files on your N: drive whereas NetStorage requires that you download a copy of the file to the computer you're using, edit the file, then upload the file back to your N drive. For this reason, using the Novell client whenever possible is recommended.

Accessing NetStorage

Open a Web browser.

Go to https://emerald.kimberly.edu/NetStorage (Note that NetStorage is case sensitive—the N and S must be capitalized.) OR use the link from Kimberly's home page.

You should see a login window; the precise appearance of the window will depend on the Web browser you're using.

Enter your Network ID and password. e.g. jsmith.staff.ms.414

In order to protect your files, do not choose to save your password.

After a successful login you should see a window that looks like this:

Accessing files using NetStorage

To see the contents of your N drive, open the Home@KIMBERLY folder, then open the folder with the same name as your Network ID. In order to edit a file you have to download and save it on the local computer.

Download the file using one of the following methods: Double-click the file.

Right-click the file and choose “Download…”

Click the checkbox next to the file, then click the "File" menu in the browser window (not the browser's File menu) and choose “Download…”.

You should be presented with a file open/save/download window (the precise appearance and options will vary by browser). Choose the option to save the file to disk then save the file to a location you can remember (e.g., the Desktop or My Documents). Note that choosing the option to open the file does not actually open the original file from your N drive. Instead, a local copy of the file is saved, typically in a directory that may be difficult to locate when the time comes to upload the edited file back to your N drive.

Open the downloaded file in the appropriate program and make the changes you want. Remember: you will be editing a local copy of the file, not the actual file on your N drive.

Save the file and close it.

To place a copy of the edited file back in your N drive it must be uploaded using NetStorage.

Return to the NetStorage browser window.

Click the "File" menu in the browser window (not the browser's File menu) and choose "Upload…".

You should get an “Upload File” dialog.

Click the “Browse” button and navigate to the location where you saved your file.

In the resulting dialog, select the file and open it. This should place the filename in the “File” box of the “Upload File” window. If additional files are to be uploaded, click the plus (+) button next to the browse button and select more files.

Click the “Upload” button.
