Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader - You are able to see your child's Accelerated Reader and STAR record from your home computer or anywhere you can get on the internet. You can see which quizzes they have taken, what percentage of their AR goal they have reached, what their average percent correct is, and how well they did on the last STAR test. Plus, you get this information instantly – as soon as they take a quiz, you can see the results.

Here is how to get there. The URL or internet address is http://hosted57.renlearn.com/250262/ Once you are on the Welcome to Renaissance Place page, click on parent. Your login is the first letter of your first name and your last name with no spaces. (Mine would be vowings) The first time you login your password should be 12345 and it should ask you to change your password after that so you can select your own. If you can't get on please email me with your name and the names of your students and I will enter you into the data base. vowings@kimberly.edu

If you want to see if a book has an AR quiz, please go to this web page http://www.renlearn.com/store/quiz_home.asp If we don't already have the quiz, please tell your child to ask Mrs. Owings to order it and we can get it immediately.

The Accelerated Reader Program is a major part of our reading program. Students progress is charted on our Accelerated Reading "Catch the Reading Wave" wall. All students set an annual goal of how many points they should reach by the end of the year based on their own reading ability. When they earn 10% of that goal, their name is written on a die cut shape and placed on the wall. For every 25%, their figure is moved to the next section.

All the students who reach their goal are invited along with their parents to an Ice Cream Sundae Social in May. This is hosted by our superintendent. At that time they also receive a ribbon. The ten readers who have earned the top number of points receive a trophy.

We will also hold a “Beach Party” in May as a reward for all the reading the students have done. We have many activities for those students who have reached their goal. These include a cake walk, a fishing pond, petting zoo, face painting, and races. The fair is planned and put on by the high school advanced health class and ag classes.

Students also work towards different certification levels. (see chart below.) For the Independent Level they need to read three books by themselves and accumulate 10 points. Super Readers need to read three books worth one point each and accumulate 15 points. They continue through three other levels until they reach the Classic Readers who read 3 books in the 6th grade or above reading level that are worth 8 or more points each and accumulate 90 points. The final level is the Honors Reader where they accumulate an additional 100 points by reading and testing on books from a specific list.

Stages of Certification

Independent Reader
Read three books and pass tests on one’s own, plus accumulate 10 points.
Super Reader
Read and pass tests on three books of one point or better.
Advanced Reader
Read and pass tests on three books at 3.0 reading level or higher worth two points.
(This stage is optional for 4th and 5th graders)
Galloping Reader
Read and pass tests on three books at 3.5 reading level or higher worth three points or more.
(AR will not figure this level.)
Star Reader
Read and pass tests on three books at 4.0 reading level or higher worth four points or more.
Classic Reader
Read and pass tests on three books at 6.0 reading level or higher worth 7 points or more.
Honors Reader
Read and accumulate 100 additional points from a specific list of advanced literature.
(50 points for 3rd graders)

Parents,
Students improve their reading by practicing their reading. The more they practice, the better reader they will become. One way they practice is by reading books and taking AR quizzes on them so we can see how well they are understanding what they read. However, just earning points will not necessarily improve a student's reading. They need to be constantly challenged in other ways. This is accomplished by reading longer and increasingly harder books. We encourage this by having the students progress through the different certification levels each year. We hope this chart helps you understand and keep track of where your child is and where he/she is headed next.
